History and Relationship with the Zlin Region

1754-fame.jpg
The creation of an independent Faculty of Management and Economics with its headquarters in Zlín, and an off-shoot of the Brno University of Technology, grew out of the sudden need for development of the Moravian micro-regions of Zlín, Uherské Hradiště, Kroměříž, Vsetín and Hodonín and especially from the necessity for the dynamic development of the industrial, commercial, and public sector administration institutions of the eastern Moravian micro-regions. The driving force lay especially in the urgent necessities of the dynamic evolution of local industrial, commercial and Public Service administrative institutions.

One of the determining factors was the historical tradition and significance of Tomas Bata and Zlín as well as in the development of his uniquely Czech and world-recognised conception of management, enterprise economics, and the integration of enterprise and social education.

The concrete expression of these tendencies were through the establishment of the "Ševcovská" (Shoemakers`) University, and the Masaryk Experimental School, as well as the establishment of the Psycho-technical Laboratory and the creation of a Studies Institute with its National Economy Department.

The concentration of university pedagogues in Zlín after the forced closure of higher educational establishments in 1939 was a boon to illegal research and to university-level teaching, bearing its fruit in the post-war industrial development and build up of research capacity. The evolution of the rubbers, plastics, and leather-working industries in Zlín and the above-mentioned surrounding regions eventually compelled the formation of university-level educational establishments in the following historical progression:

1956 Establishment of a consultancy centre at the VŠE (University of Economics) in Prague.
1960 Establishment of a university level establishment in the Svit Nationalised Enterprise as a part of the SVŠT in Bratislava
1963 Transfer of the existing university level establishment to under aegis of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the Technical University in Brno.
1969 Establishment of the Technological Faculty of the Technical University in Brno with its campus and seat in Zlín.
1971 Beginnings of the setting up of the course of Economics and Management of the Consumer Goods Industry, eventually to become an independent Department from 1974 onwards.

At the present time, as part of its educational activities in the full-time and the part-time (hereinafter referred to as "combined") modes of study, it offers three Bachelor's, two follow-up Master's, and two Doctoral degree programmes. It is in the process of developing a Lifelong Learning mode of study at a Bachelor's degree level and a follow-up Master's degree programme. Within the framework of Tomas Bata University in Zlín, it serves as guarantor of one Bachelor's degree programme implemented at the Tomas Bata Business Academy (the Higher Technical School of Economics), one as a full-time discipline and one in the "combined" form.

Especially as regards the tuition provided in the "combined" and Lifelong Learning mode of study, it has systematically begun to integrate and implement applied forms of distance education e-Learning studies delivered via its dedicated portal: http://education.utb.cz. Since 2003, the Faculty has had the right to administer and hold habilitation procedures in the field of "The Management and Economics of Enterprises", which was in 2007 extended. At the same time, the right to implement professorial nomination procedure was acquired and is valid until 2011. This validity has been extended by the Accreditation Commission until 2019.

Research activities of the Faculty of Management and Economics are aimed at the design of regional industrial policy and the elaboration of methodological materials for firms that serve the modernization of business processes to increase competitiveness of firms. Economic research is carried out in close cooperation with enterprises and institutions within the region. The faculty also provides facilities for the development of cluster initiatives in the region. To support scientific research and increase cooperation with companies, the Centre for Applied Economic Research was established. The centre focuses on research of performance management and measurement of enterprises and clusters, using benchmarking to manage organizations, knowledge management, measurement of intellectual capital, corporate social responsibility and economic aspects of industrial ecology.
