Department of Statistics and Quantitative Methods
The Department of Statistics and Quantitative Methods (DSQM) was founded in 1998 with the main aim to develop and improve teaching informatics and statistics implemented at the Faculty of Management and Economics at Tomas Bata University in Zlín. It existed at the faculty with the name Department of Informatics and Statistics until 2008.
The Department currently provides tuition aimed at statistics, quantitative methods, information support for managerial decision making, typography, and now also project management. Furthermore, it provides tuition related to information resources and their use at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications.
The employees are involved in research activities in the field of statistical data analysis, data mining, competitive intelligence and eLearning issues. Research activities are supported by extensive publishing activities, project activities, and projects funded by the University Development Fund, European Structural Funds (project RIUS - Initiation of the Inter-university Study in the Network of Selected Universities in the Czech Republic CZ.04.1.03./220.127.116.11/0067) and the EU (project EVENE [27 KiB] - Erasmus Virtual Economics & Management Studies Exchange). The DSQM is an accredited centre for ECDL testing, performs certification in computer literacy at a basic level (ECDL Core) and advanced level (ECDL Advanced).
The Department guaranteed and organized an annual international conference called Internet, Competitiveness and Organisational Security (1999-2005), Internet and Organisational Security (2006 - 2007) and Internet, Competitiveness and Organisational Security (2008). Currently, the conference is named Internet, Competitiveness and Organisational Security in Knowledge Society and the DSQM participates in the conference with the Faculty of Applied Informatics. The conferences are held annually in Zlín in cooperation with the nationwide event March - the Internet Month.
In addition to the above, the statistical staff of the Department participates in the organization of conferences STAKAN and TEXperience.
The Department cooperates with the Centre for Further Education at FaME TBU in Zlín in the development of virtual learning environment that supports distance learning, as well as many other institutions and the Czech Statistical Office, Regional Office Zlín.
